The relationships we build between students and local employers today can help shape Lynchburg’s workforce tomorrow. Every fall, Lynchburg’s higher-education institutions welcome thousands of students who bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and tremendous potential to our community. Our higher-education community includes Liberty University, the University of Lynchburg, Randolph College, Central Virginia Community College, Centra College of Nursing, and Virginia University of Lynchburg. Together, these institutions offer academic, technical, and professional pathways that help prepare students for careers across a wide range of industries. As we work to support businesses in the City of Lynchburg, I see a tremendous opportunity to connect more of these students with the employers who are already here.
The Opportunity Begins Before Graduation
When we talk about developing our workforce, it is easy to focus on what happens after a student earns a degree or credential. But some of the most valuable connections begin much earlier. Internships, apprenticeships, capstone projects, part-time jobs, and other work-based learning opportunities allow students to apply what they are learning while getting to know local employers. For businesses, these experiences are an opportunity to introduce students to your organization, share your expertise, and build relationships with people who may become future employees. For students, they offer something just as important: a chance to discover the businesses, industries, and career paths available right here in Lynchburg.
Helping Students See a Future Here
Our colleges and universities bring talent to Lynchburg. We want to give that talent a reason to stay. A student who completes an internship with a local company, works alongside a mentor, or helps solve a real business challenge begins to see our community differently. Lynchburg becomes more than the place where they attended school. It becomes a place where they can imagine building a career and a life. That is why I believe the relationships between our higher-education institutions and local employers are so important. They benefit students, help businesses connect with emerging talent, and strengthen our community.
An Invitation to Lynchburg Employers
If your business has considered offering an internship, hosting a student project, or creating another opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience, I encourage you to explore it. You do not have to start with a large program. A conversation with a faculty member, a student visit, or a single internship can be the beginning of a valuable relationship. Our goal is simple: connect the talent studying in Lynchburg with the businesses growing here—and help more students discover a future in our community.
