There’s now even more reason to love and live in Lynchburg, Virginia. Starting with the Class of 2019, all seniors who attend Lynchburg City Schools will have an opportunity for a scholarship at one of the local colleges.
Heritage High School and E.C. Glass High School students—which consists of around 550 seniors each year—will be eligible for scholarships to attend Centra College of Nursing, Central Virginia Community College, Liberty University, Randolph College, Sweet Briar College and University of Lynchburg. The Stay Close, Go Far Promise Scholarship Program is sponsored and funded by Lynchburg Beacon of Hope, in partnership with the participating colleges, and is expected to have a profound and transformational effect on the City of Lynchburg.
Regardless of merit or need, last-dollar scholarships are available to all seniors who have been in Lynchburg City Schools since 9th grade, graduate and choose to pursue college or technical education at one of Lynchburg’s accredited colleges, universities, or technical schools. Students can receive up to $8,000 over two years to attend Central Virginia Community College and a like amount over four years to attend any of the other schools.In addition, ten more scholarships will be provided on a competitive basis to Lynchburg City Schools graduates who continue their postsecondary education outside of the area.
“When we align economic and human development – when we invest in our young people – it yields incredible returns for our local businesses and for our community,” said Marjette Upshur, director of economic development and tourism for the City of Lynchburg. “The Promise program puts the City of Lynchburg on the map as one of only 200 communities in the country with such an effort.” On average, Americans who complete college or technical certification degrees earn much more than those with a high school diploma, are less likely to fall into poverty and are more secure when they retire. With this initiative, City of Lynchburg students will be set up for a bright future.
